I agree - soaking is so important if you don't know the sugar content. I
test all my BP - every time there is a new lot number. Thankfully only
every 6-9 months. But last year a particular batch ran 18% sugar. They had
so many beets to process for sugar they were rushing production to get it
done before they rotted on the ground. Thus leaving an extra 10% sugar in
the pulp. PLAIN BP should run about 6-8% sugar (every time testing less
than 1% starch so I quit testing that) - that to have 18-19% was scary.
After soaking in lots of water for 2 hours and draining the sugar dropped to
8%. And after soaking, draining and a hot water rinse the sugar dropped to
1.5%. This was all done with test through Dairy One.
I have mixed feelings on the choke issue - I think any horse prone to choke
will be predisposed to choking on whatever. Seems there is no documentation
that choke is higher with dry BP. I just prefer to add more moisture to my
horses gut than feed dry. A handful no big deal - but I feed 1# twice a
day.
