NHB Deurene Starts Cooperation with Jaime Jackson

The American natural hoof care specialist Jaime Jackson – a former farrier, now known in the equestrian world for his visionary studies on holistic horse care, which includes creation of the “Natural Trim” and the natural boarding concept called Paddock Paradise (written about in his books The Natural Horse, Paddock Paradise, and the forthcoming, The Natural Trim) – has agreed to form an alliance with the Dutch Equestrian Center aka NHB Deurne, which is the home of the European Federation of Farriers annual educational fair. School administrators visited Jackson in California this month to discuss the agreement and also to see the Paddock Paradise model Jackson has in development along with the horses belonging to he and his business partner that serve as a model to demonstrate the effects of Jackson’s studies, principles and practices.

The new curriculum, which begins in September, will be mandatory for students in some programs and available to all students in the school’s Health, Wildlife, Farrier, Sports and Business Studies programs at NHB Deurne. Lectures on Jackson’s holistic view on boarding and management, nutrition, behavior, the importance of a naturally shaped hoof and the process of the natural trim method will be topics of the course. Detailed and thorough information about his ideas, research and findings will be incorporated in the new course Horses & Wildlife Studies as well as the existing farrier course. His landmark book, The Natural Horse, will be used as the course textbook. As a special project, students of the Horse & Wildlife Studies course will implement Jaime’s ideas on natural boarding and, in conjunction with students from Landscaping Studies, will build their own Paddock Paradise (a natural boarding concept) on the campus grounds where some of the school’s horses 50+ will live. Currently the school is also working on a 10-day course on Natural Hoof Care, using the AANHCP Trimming Guidelines, which will start in the near future. At a later date, the school plans to transition the 10-day course to the development of a full three-year vocational course.

Change of direction
The cooperation with Jaime Jackson fits ideally in the change of direction of NHB Deurne, in which among other things, has been decided that alliances should be formed with equine businesses to incorporate their ideas in the curriculum of the school. Furthermore the school will develop other alliances with professionals from the ‘alternative’ equestrian scene, which should result in better equipped students and a better integration between school and work field. Finally NHB Deurne is developing new curricula and specializations to create a broader spectrum of opportunities with new employees and staff members.

Bij die van mij merk ik heel goed dat ze minder bewegen sinds ik weer met strookbegrazing begonnen ben. Ze kunnen op een pad rond het hele perceel lopen en in een klein stukje wei dat ik 2x per dag een heel klein beetje groter maak. Omdat ze nu veel blijven rondhangen in het strookbegrazingsweitje, overweeg ik ze in het vervolg maar 1x per dag een nieuw strookje te geven, en dat strookbegrazingsweitje de andere helft van de dag af te sluiten, zodat ze dan alleen op het pad kunnen.

Mijn pony's lopen op het pad duidelijk meer dan in de wei. Het pad hebben ze in de winter flink stukgelopen, waardoor er nu alleen nog maar kort gras groeit langs de randen (waar ze niet kunnen lopen i.v.m. het schrikdraad). Dat is ideaal, want dan hebben ze op het pad toch altijd iets te knabbelen, maar daar moeten ze dan wel veel meters voor maken. Vooral Dibble (met de grootste aanleg om dik te worden) staat zo ongeveer in een spagaat met haar voorbenen om bij het gras onder de draad te komen, dus ze rekt op die manier ook haar spieren nog wat op (helaas wel bijna altijd aan dezelfde kant, want ze heeft een duidelijke voorkeurskant om te buigen).

Natuurlijk is het heel erg leuk je paardje vanaf begin af aan mee te maken, maar met rijden zou ik toch nog echt een aantal jaar wachten, hoor... Hoort inrijden ook bij zijn opleiding waar je over schrijft? Hopelijk niet, want je paardje is nog niet eens 3, toch? Maar je zou de eerste niet zijn, en misschien hebben mensen je verteld dat het al wel kan. Als dat zo is, zou ik toch nog eens goed nadenken wat je belangrijker vindt: nu al snel kunnen rijden (met het risico dat je paardje al op relatief vroege leeftijd 'op' is of klachten krijgt) of heel veel jaren plezier beleven van je paardje (en dan op de koop toe nemen dat je nog een paar jaartjes wacht met het daadwerkelijke rijden).

Hierin staan ook allemaal dingen die je al wel met een jong paard kunt doen. Als je nu nog een aantal jaar rustig aan doet en al het voorbereidende werk doet (bijv. veel wandelen om hem overal aan te laten wennen), heb je straks waarschijnlijk een ideaal rijpaardje waar je tientallen jaren plezier van zult hebben!
